Privacy at Layers
Layers is a social platform designed to help people express and share the different sides of who they are.
Your privacy matters to us. This Privacy Policy explains what information Layers collects, how we use it, when it may be shared, the choices you have regarding your information, and how you can contact us.
By using Layers, you acknowledge the practices described in this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
The information we collect depends on how you use Layers and the features you choose to use.
Information You Provide to Us
Account Information
When you create a Layers account, we may collect: email address, username, display name, birth month and birth year, and authentication information necessary to create and secure your account.
Your birth month and year are used to determine whether you meet Layers' minimum age requirement and may also be used to provide an age-appropriate experience.
Profile Information
You may choose to provide information for your profile, such as profile photo, bio, and other information you choose to include on your profile. Some profile information is visible to other Layers users depending on your account and privacy settings.
Content You Create
We collect content you create, upload, or share through Layers, including photos, videos, captions, layers and layer names, layer cover photos, comments and replies, and other content you choose to post. We also process information about how you organize content into Layers.
Activity and Interactions
We collect information about your activity on Layers, such as accounts you follow, layers you follow, likes, comments and replies, follow requests, and other interactions with content and users. This information is necessary to operate social features such as feeds, profiles, notifications, and interactions.
Messages
If you use Layers' messaging features, we process and store the messages and associated information necessary to provide the messaging service. Messages are not publicly visible to other Layers users unless a participant chooses to share them.
Reports, Appeals, Support and Feedback
If you report content or another user, appeal a decision, submit a bug report or suggestion, or contact Layers for support, we collect the information you provide as part of that communication. This may include information about your account, the content or account being reported, your explanation, and other information you choose to provide.
Information Collected Automatically
When you use Layers, certain technical information may be processed automatically by Layers and the service providers we use to operate the platform. This may include IP address, browser or device type, operating system, date and time of requests, pages or features accessed, request and server-log information, error, performance, and diagnostic information, and approximate location (such as city or country) derived from an IP address.
Layers does not currently request access to your device's precise location.
Some of this information is processed by infrastructure providers to deliver Layers, maintain security, prevent abuse, diagnose technical problems, and keep the service reliable. Vercel, for example, states that it may process end-user IP addresses, IP-derived city/country information, system configuration information, device information and service-generated logs when providing infrastructure to its customers.
2. How We Use Information
We use information collected through Layers to: create, authenticate, and maintain user accounts; provide Layers' features and functionality; display profiles and user-generated content; allow users to create and organize Layers; provide feeds, follows, likes, comments, messages, and notifications; determine age eligibility and support age-appropriate experiences; respond to reports, appeals, support requests, feedback, and bugs; enforce our Terms of Service and Community Guidelines; detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, security threats, ban or suspension evasion, and violations of our policies; maintain, troubleshoot, and improve Layers; protect the rights, safety, and integrity of Layers, our users, and others; and comply with applicable laws and lawful requests.
We may also use aggregated or de-identified information to understand how Layers is used and improve the service where permitted by law.
3. How Information Is Shared
We do not currently sell your personal information or use your personal information for third-party targeted advertising.
We may disclose information in the following circumstances.
Service Providers
We use third-party service providers to operate Layers. These include providers that support services such as hosting and application delivery, database and storage infrastructure, authentication, security and fraud prevention, technical operations, and push notifications. Our current infrastructure providers include Vercel and Supabase. For push notifications, we use Firebase Cloud Messaging, a service provided by Google. These providers may process information on our behalf as necessary to provide their services.
Other Users
Layers is a social platform. Information you intentionally make public or share with other users may be visible to those users. This can include your username, display name, profile photo, bio, public Layers, posts, comments, likes, and other public interactions. The visibility of some information may depend on the privacy settings and audience choices available within Layers.
Legal and Safety Reasons
We may preserve, use, or disclose information when we reasonably believe doing so is necessary to comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process, or lawful government request; protect the safety, rights, or property of Layers, our users, or others; investigate fraud, abuse, security incidents, or violations of our policies; or prevent or respond to serious harm.
Business Transfers
If Layers is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, sale of assets, bankruptcy, or similar business transaction, information may be disclosed or transferred as part of that transaction, subject to applicable law.
4. Public and Private Information
Layers allows users to share information with different audiences. Information you post publicly may be visible to other Layers users. Content shared through private features is intended to be limited according to the privacy and audience settings associated with that feature.
However, users who can access your content may still save, copy, screenshot, record, or share that information outside Layers. Please consider what you choose to share and with whom.
5. Photos, Videos and Device Media
Layers allows you to select photos, videos, files, or other media from your device and may allow you to capture new media using system-provided functionality. Where available, Layers uses system-provided selection tools that allow you to choose what content to share rather than requiring unrestricted access to your entire photo library. We process media you select or upload as necessary to provide the features you request.
6. Push Notifications
If you choose to enable push notifications, Layers uses Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM), a service provided by Google, to deliver them to your device. To do this, Layers generates a device-specific push token and stores it, associated with your account, so that we know where to send a notification when relevant activity occurs (such as a like, comment, message, or follow). This token is shared with Google as part of routing the notification to your device, and with Apple's push notification service for delivery to iOS devices. Layers does not use push tokens for advertising or share them with third parties for any purpose unrelated to delivering notifications.
You can control push-notification permissions at any time through your device settings. If you disable push notifications or delete your account, your device token is removed from our systems.
7. Children and Age Requirements
Layers is intended for a general audience and is not intended for children under 13. You must be at least 13 years old to create a Layers account. A higher minimum age may apply where required by law.
Layers uses birth month and birth year to determine age eligibility. If the age information entered during signup indicates that a person does not meet the applicable minimum age requirement, Layers does not create the account. If we later learn that an account belongs to a child who does not meet the applicable minimum age requirement, we may take steps to restrict or delete the account and associated information.
The FTC states that COPPA applies to general-audience services when they have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information from a child under 13.
8. Data Retention
We retain personal information for as long as reasonably necessary to provide Layers, maintain your account, fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, enforce agreements, and protect the safety and security of Layers. Different categories of information may be retained for different periods depending on why the information is processed and applicable legal requirements.
When information is no longer reasonably necessary, we may delete or de-identify it in accordance with applicable law.
9. Account and Data Deletion
You can initiate deletion of your Layers account from within the app. When you delete your account, Layers deletes your account and associated account data from our active application and backend systems, including associated data stored through our backend provider, subject to limited information we may be required or permitted to retain for legal, security, fraud-prevention, dispute-resolution, ban or suspension enforcement, or similar legitimate purposes.
Account deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. Information that other users have independently copied, shared, or captured outside Layers may remain outside our control.
10. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights regarding your personal information. These may include the right to access certain personal information we maintain about you, correct inaccurate personal information, delete your personal information, request information about how your personal information is used or disclosed, withdraw certain permissions or consent where applicable, and exercise other rights provided by applicable privacy law.
Layers also provides controls that allow users to manage certain account, privacy, and notification settings directly within the app.

11. Security
We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to protect information processed through Layers. However, no internet service, storage system, or method of electronic transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.
Users are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of their account credentials and should notify Layers if they believe their account has been compromised.
12. International Users
Layers and our service providers, including Vercel, Supabase, and Google (Firebase Cloud Messaging), may process and store information in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. If you access Layers from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to and processed in countries whose data-protection laws differ from those where you live.
Where required, we will take appropriate steps to protect personal information transferred internationally.
13. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy as Layers evolves, new features are introduced, our practices change, or applicable laws and requirements change. When appropriate, we will notify users of material changes.
The effective date at the top of this Privacy Policy indicates when the current version became effective.
